New Manitowoc submarine festival kicks off this weekend

This is going to look like shit for formating, but I could open it.

The inaugural Sub Fest will take place July 10, 11 and 12. The festival is a combined effort of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, the Capitol Civic Centre, the Rahr-West Art Museum, the Manitowoc County Historical Society and the Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau. Sub Fest will feature a different submarine-related theme each year. This year, the festival will focus on World War II, specifically the 28 submarines made in Manitowoc during the war. Karen Duvalle, submarine curator at Wisconsin Maritime Museum, said ideas for Sub Fest arose about a year ago. "The idea came about as a way to really honor our community's heritage," Duvalle said. "We wanted to educate the public on submarines and their importance to our community."

Sub Fest was initially imagined as nothing more than a submarine film festival, Duvalle said. However, as ideas changed and expanded, the festival became an outlet for films, music and art.

The festival will span downtown Manitowoc, with events at the Capitol Civic Centre, Wisconsin Maritime Museum and Rahr-West Art Museum.

The Capitol Civic Centre will feature the films "Legacy of Lagarto," "Destination Tokyo," "Operation Petticoat" and "Run Silent, Run Deep" throughout the weekend. "These are all films about submarine life in World War II," said Matthew Schliesman, executive director of the Capitol Civic Centre. "We chose films that were fairly well known and fairly well done." Friday night, Sub Fest's film fans can enjoy an appearance from a special guest. Actor Jim Bates of "Run Silent, Run Deep," will introduce the film at its 7:30 p.m. showing, along with a Q&A with the audience following the film.

The Capitol Civic Centre also will showcase a unique musical presentation from Manitowoc's Lakeshore Big Band. The group, which specializes in big band music from the World War II era, will deliver a special performance created specifically for the festival at 8 p.m. Saturday.

"The Lakeshore Big Band is creating a USO-type show to fit into Sub Fest," Schliesman said. "USO shows were entertainment for soldiers during the war. They were live music and dancing and singing."

To attend the USO show, guests must purchase a ticket separate from their admission to Sub Fest. These tickets are available for $15 from the Capitol Civic Centre box office.

Sub Fest attendees also can find entertainment at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, which will feature a new immersive exhibit.

"For Sub Fest, we wanted to showcase some changes to our museum," Duvalle said. "One of these is a new exhibit, 'USS Cobia Below the Surface,' which includes a submarine simulation experience."

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum will offer live music, self-guided submarine tours, a sub eating contest, food and beer tents, kids' areas, a memorial service aboard USS Cobia and a water skiing show.

The Rahr-West Art Museum will contribute to Sub Fest with an exhibit titled "A View from the Periscope." This is a traveling exhibit from the United States Naval History and Heritage Command Art Collections. "A View from the Periscope" features artwork depicting naval submarines of the 20th century and the submariners who served aboard them.

Day passes and weekend passes for Sub Fest can be purchased at any of the three locations during the festival. A day pass is $15 for adults and $10 for children, and a weekend pass is $25 for adults and $15 for children.

"There's something at Sub Fest for all ages and interests," Duvalle said. "There's so much going on. It's going to be a lot of fun."
