New Mazda3 with HCCI Coming (Motoring, via Jalopnik)

This has been my position but if they can push out HCCI as a transition to electric it gets interesting. I think we are a decade from sufficient infrastructure that everyone buys electric. I've been saying I want to nurse my 2014 3 until I can get a Tesla Model 3 or equivalent, but want to wait at least 3 more years to see how the electrics do and what kind of charging infrastructure we have. I'd wait 5-6 more years but might by another has or hybrid car in between in that case. If Mazda had a 50mpg+ HCCI with a turbo (and gas prices stay under $4-5, this under $3 cannot last much longer), which is what this article suggests may be coming, I'd be tempted. Problem might come with sharply finished resale value in 10-15 years however. The electric/autonomous revolution is happening way faster than anyone predicted 5 years ago.

For those of us who love ICEs as enthusiasts it may get expensive AF to keep one as a hobby car. I'm buying a country place this year and we are looking for a 2 car garage so I can bank the smallest, sportiest, and most efficient small ICE car I can afford, insure, and fix myself, brand new. In my mind that's the last ICE Mx5 hardtop, whatever that is. But a Speed3 with HCCI would also be compelling.
