New Orleans Mayor: Confederate Statues Honor A 'Fictional, Sanitized Confederacy'

The confederacy was evil.

Let's cast this American dilemma in a different light.

The problem is that by removing statues we erasing the history and tributes to nazi germany. There are already Holocaust deniers. Imagine a future where all tributes to the past, right or wrong are gone. How many more people will deny what they can't see?

Imagine the doors of Auschwitz closed, the buildings destroyed. Imagine the children who never learn what happened there. Imagine a new generation who distrust their neighbors who are Black, White, Muslim, or Jew.

Those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. This is why we need to keep our history intact.

ISIS destroyed historic sites in Palmyra, Syria because they want history to be forgotten. The world was justifiably outraged.

We're destroying our own history because we don't like what our ancestors did here. We're whitewashing the past in hopes that future generations will never know what we as Americans once celebrated.

This is no different than shuttering the doors of Auschwitz. With the best intentions we're removing reminders of what we hope to never become.

Let public discourse and derision continue to remind future generations of where we came from and who we hope to become.

This is why I believe the statues of the shitty racist confederacy serve a noble purpose.
