New perspective on sleepless moms and dads

I have a super happy baby but he has never been good at sleeping. He's 17 months now and we have not once gone through the night. At 2 months old his days and nights were backwards and his longest sleep stretch happened between 8AM and noon. He slowly got his sleep schedule on track to sleep from 9:30PM to 4AM (with 2-3 wake ups) at around 3 months and then improved to sleeping 7PM to 5AM (3-6 wake ups) when he dropped to 3 regular cat naps a day (about 30 mins each).

It's been a struggle but it's bizarre what a person can get used to. I've found that I'm perfectly functional and feel just fine as long as I get a 4 hour stretch plus a 2 hour stretch or three 3 hours stretches. Otherwise it physically hurts the next day. Sleep is always my first priority before eating and showering.

I hear it gets better, and it has somewhat, but it's still really hard. Lowering my expectations has helped more than anything else.
