New player help!

I asked this question to some friends when I was about half a year in too. I got shitty answers. Let me attempt to rectify that.

1) Starcity Games Personally I'm not a huge fan. Their coverage is on point (scglive on twitch). But their articles tend to lack a certain something (usually good deck lists or readability). Still, they're a pillar of the community and a great place to get your feet wet in Magic strategy. BONUS VALUE: This is where you should be watching magic streams when possible. Eventually you should start watching GPs instead of invitationals and opens because the level of play is slightly higher.

2) Channel Fireball This is the best Magic strategy website on the Internet. You want to watch a pro do a draft? This is where you go. You want to hear what LSV thinks about the current meta? This is where you go. You want to see weird home brews that rarely put up results? This is where you go (specifically, you mentioned learning how to home brew, Travis Woo is probably your boy for this. Not a fan of his lists, but there's no one in the game that breaks down the process of building a rogue deck better than him.)

3) LRCast I'm pretty sure this is universally considered the best Magic podcast. Currently it features Marshall Sutcliffe (if you start watching GP's you'll see/hear him a lot) and Luis Scott Vargas (co-founder of Channel Fireball, hilarious guy, abomination behind the paulpaulpaul gimmick that the community won't stop beating to death.) they talk about limited with a focus on draft. I believe the next episode should be a rules review for DTK ("But I already KNOW the rules!" I hear you proclaim. You probably don't know them as well as you think. They go deep on different mechanical interactions and can give some valuable insight.), after that it will be the set review.

4) The Mothership This is just slang for wizards Magic page. They employ tons of quality writers who discuss deck building, drafting, strategy, and the meta. There's also Uncharted Realms for that sweet flavor break between articles.

5) Brainstorm Brewery Magic finance. They're kind of dickbags, but in a humorous/likable way. Show your support.

Bonus Materials time:

Twitch streams -

Numotthenummy: Entertainer extraordinaire. He may not always win, but he does always have a great time.

Vintage Super League: Ever wondered what would happen if The Justice League and Avengers had a free for all? Well this won't answer that question, but you do get to see Randy Buehler make turn one kills against Kai Budde, which is just as good.

MrScottyMac: I don't watch this guy. (Still pretty highly recommended)

DarkestMage: I won't watch this guy. (Recommended, just not as highly. I don't like encouraging people to watch someone tilt the fuck out, even if he has gotten better about it)

SCGLive: Cedric Phillips and Patrick Sullivan kick ass on coverage. Go watch it for a bit, I think there's a stream up right now. If you're ever confused about what's happening for more than thirty seconds, someone somewhere might eat their shoe. It won't be me though; I don't have enough footwear for that foolishness.

ChannelFireball: The players are as good as the coverage is bad; eventually you get used to the clunky overlays and obnoxious countdown screens. Eventually.

Podcasts:

•LRCast (already mentioned) •Top Level Podcast (Take everything Patrick Chapin says with a grain of salt. Gurmag Angler is not the new Tarmogoyf. The Innovator is brilliant, but also a little crazy) •The Spike Feed (if only for the catchy intro music and strict attention to production quality) •Brainstorm Brewery (if you ever decide you want to try and make some money back off this hobby, just blindly follow these guys suggestions. Expect to catch yourself saying "shut up Corbin" at random times of the day.) •Magic the Amateuring (almost all of their advice is terrible but their rapport is too good not to tune into) •CEDTalks (looks like them starcity boys are at it again! general lee horn)

Also a shout out to The Meadery: I don't read or watch anything on there except the Weekly Mulligan, but they're layout looks like something from 2009 which puts them about 10 years ahead of every other Magic website. Seriously CFB get your shit together.

(Note: Every disparaging thing I said is meant to be taken tongue in cheek. I wouldn't endorse something that wasn't high quality.

Except you CFB website. Seriously: Get. Your Shit. Together.)
