New proud owner of a Wii U

All right, that makes sense. The Switch is fairly priced, but I can see how it’s not an ideal purchase for a broke college student. The Switch’s accessories are what will really tear your wallet apart, though. $70 for an additional pair of Joy-Cons and $65 for a Pro Controller? No, thanks! First-party AAA games are also expensive, but that’s to be expected. The eShop is overpriced as always, though.

For me, though, it would not feel right buying a Wii U when the Switch exists. It would mean that I would have to enjoy objectively inferior versions of games out on the Switch. Mario Kart 8 without the extra content, improved Battle Mode, and higher resolution; Splatoon with less content and an active player base of about four players, Breath of the Wild (and every other game) without the portability aspect, and so on. This wouldn’t be much of an issue if half the Wii U’s library didn’t exist on the Switch in improved forms.

Since you’re going this route, I highly recommend you only buy physical games for your Wii U so that you can sell them later once you get a Switch. There’s no need for Mario Kart 8 when you’ve got 8 Deluxe, for example. You were probably going to do that anyway, though, since you likely bought the console and will buy or have bought the games used.
