New research provides evidence that counties with higher levels of Trump support in 2016 fared worse than their non-Trump-supporting counterparts after implementing public health policies meant to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Slight mischaracterization on my part. I’ll put together a better list of those who died.

Brian Sicknick, a Capitol Police Officer, was struck in the head with a fire extinguisher by insurrectionists. He died from his injuries two days later.

60 other Capitol Police officers were beaten, several of whom were struck in the head with metal objects.

Kevin Greeson, a Trump supporter, died of a heart attack.

Benjamin Phillips, who organized a caravan of Trump supporters from Pennsylvania to DC had a stroke.

Rosanne Boyland, another Trump supporter, was trampled to death by her fellow supporters.

And finally, Ashley Babbit, a Trump supporter, was shot by a Capitol Police Officer amid a group of insurrectionists who had already forcibly entered the Capitol and were attempting to breach the Senate chamber doors. She later died at the hospital.

So, people died that day. None of them had to. There was an attempt to stop a legal, democratic process from taking place by a group of armed insurrectionists under the direction of certain GOP leaders and carrying Trump flags into the Capitol amid chants to “hang Mike Pence.” These were not peaceful people. This was not a protest. This was not a sightseeing tour.

It was an attempted coup, and people lost their lives. These people and their mindset/beliefs continue to be a threat to our society.
