The new science of animal cognition is forcing countries to overhaul their laws

I guess my interpretation of "many people believe this" is somewhat different. I wouldn't say that "many people believe the Earth is flat", I'd say "some people" because they are the overwhelming minority. But that's being pedantic. Whether or not it's "many" people doesn't really matter. If this study helps people who did hold that belief, then I'm glad some progress has been made, but to me it's like the flat Earthers. You show them evidence and they'll either say it's faked or inaccurate. Also I'm not sure what countries based their laws on whether or not animals are sentient, so to me it seems like the article is stretching the truth a bit.
