I agree that offering banking services would help the unbanked, but a lot of them still wouldn’t take advantage of such a service for the same reasons they don’t take advantage of the existing services out there.

Plus it places an administrative hurdle on certain, particularly vulnerable people. Imagine that you’re homeless, you make 20 bucks panhandling, and you want to get some Shake Shack. As it stands you can take your $20 into Shake Shack and get whatever you want. But under a cashless system, you’d have to first put the $20 onto your card — because there’s no way you have credit, this is all debit. Putting aside that we’d almost certainly find some way to charge you a fee for doing so, that extra step presents a sufficient hurdle that you’re probably not going to buy Shake Shack. And, you know, if you want Shake Shack, you should be able to buy it just like anyone else.
