Newer movies ruin meaningful moments with forced jokes. Are audiences really that uncomfortable with sincere emotions?

I personally just don't see any comedy where it doesn't belong. The bombing run is an action scene, which isn't super narratively heavy until significantly later in it (and Paige's death is not played for humor at all). Poe is just a guy who jokes under pressure (it's how he was introduced in TFA too).

The lightsaber throw is meant to be weird and unsettling and make you think that it was weird and so offhand you laugh and think "what's up?" This is the one where I can legitimately see it as a mileage varies thing, but I don't think it reflects some lack of filmmaking or humor chops.

And then Luke's shoulder flick later is a moment of catharsis after the audience realizes he's alive. It's a happy moment and he punctuates it. The later actual confrontation between Luke and Kylo is dramatic except for maybe the "everything you just said is wrong" callback which comes near the end and leads Luke into stating the thesis of the film. I would say it's more amusing and part of Luke's character at that point than undermining gag.

Other than those three specific instances I can't even think of any jokes that comes close to treading on the more dramatic moments.
