Next Gen Leaf & Marketing Strategies

While 60 kWh and over 200 miles of estimated range is good enough, it's not the end. They will continue to compete on battery size up to around 250 kWh as energy density increases and the price of newer chemistries drops. There is also charging, right now 150 kW to 350 kW CCS is considered good enough but as the energy storage capacity, the charge rate will have to get close to 1MW. Let's not forget that not all the new long range electric cars can handle those charging speeds.

Then there is performance. While range right now takes precedence, if two cars sport the same energy storage capacity and charge equally fast, if one performs better it will likely attract more customers. Related to performance is exterior design. The sportier they will be, the more appealing they will try to be so that can be a deciding factor as well. While neither the Chevy Bolt nor the Model 3 can be considered universally appealing, one still has the edge over the other and so does performance.

Finally there are options, automakers should learn to offer both less than the ideal range for a significant price discount but also way over the good enough range for a premium. While most sales will happen for the ideal range, having options in terms of battery pack size ensures that most of the consumers will find what they want.
