Nice to see that not all senior judoka are idiots

Honestly I don't understand the thought process behind distancing judo from mma.

There are multiple thought processes at work here, depending on who you are talking to...

  1. The Gentle Way faction: This type of judoist (or other martial artist) believes so strongly, that their exotic asian martial art is actually a philosophy of peace and a path to enlightenment, that it borderlines esoteric nonsense. To them judo's most "violent" form is a chivalrous, fair and clean sport. In their knowledge and point of view, dangerous techniques do not exist in judo and the absense of such "cruel and unfair" methods is all what judo is about in their minds. These people don't know anything about the rules of MMA and think there aren't any. The cage, the occasinal blood and the trash talk don't help that image (MMA oragnisations are not innocent in creating that image btw.).Anyway: this faction MMA represents everything Judo should not be (brutal, rude and flashy).

  2. The feudal lords: Powerful or influental functionaries are afraid of competition and want to defend their territory. They hide behind the arguments of the Gentle Way faction and (ab)use good words like "tradition", while they kill the traditions of judo themselves.

  3. The opportunists: Politicians, especially of the conservative sort, prey upon the fears of people who do not know or understand new things. A politician who positions himself against the "barbaric display of violence that MMA is", may attract some voters.

The battles in the early days of judo were more violent than MMA is today. In his later years Kano invited instructors of other martial arts to the Kodokan and gave them support. He also sent his own students to other teachers, so they could learn new thing to improve judo. Digging trenches and building walls to seperate oneself from others never did anything good.
