Nick Nelson Tries To Blame The Players But The Commenters Are Having None Of It

The odds of this many slumps happening at the same time on the same team being unrelated are astronomical. It leaves only two possibilities. Either these guys were never actually that talented, or there is something bigger going on. Eddie Rosario is not a major league hitter, and likely never will be. You can't swing at everything and succeed long term in the MLB. Fangraphs projections knew this, many of us knew it, but somehow the Twins did not. The Twins underestimated how uncomfortable Sano would be in RF, and it's clearly affecting his hitting, IMHO. Sano is on pace for a negative dWAR of 3 this year. All of this for Trevor Plouffe (who we keep hitting 4th for some reason)? They decided to start the season with (arguably) their three best starting pitchers either in AAA or the bullpen (May, Berrios, and Duffey). Duffey earned a spot last year, in actual games. For him to lose that spot for what he did in pretend games was a joke. Then we have the bullpen. They admitted it was a top priority, then did nothing to improve it. Going back as far as I can remember, TR has extended mediocre relievers and looked to the dumpster for help. Every year. Here are the Twins pen rankings from 2011 to 2016: 29th in WAR (8.8 total), 27th in ERA (3.88), and 30th in k/9 (6.95). And the real kicker is that these numbers were padded by a few really good seasons out of Glen Perkins, who was closing on terrible teams and should have been flipped. They are reaping what they've sewn with decisions that were almost unanimously predicted to be mistakes. Sure, certain guys need to step it up, but I'd put maybe 10% of the blame for this disaster on the players. This organization seems to have no mission, purpose, or plan. Jim Pohlad sounded like a baffoon in that interview, Ryan is not constructing good rosters, and Molitor looks panicked/overwhelmed at times.
