Nielsen leaps boldly into 2011 by tracking streaming TV

We were a "Nielsen family" a couple of years ago and the whole experience was a joke (the techs were great and very friendly, it was the actual service that was bad). Nielsen had stopped by our house 4-5 years before and we told them we didn't have cable and just used Netflix but that we were still interested in the program for future reference. When they offered it to us a couple years ago they informed us that they were FINALLY branching out to cord-cutters and we eagerly signed up.

We had participated for six months before we got so frustrated with the stupid box of flashing lights on the TV that I called to have them come take it out of my house. The box on top of your TV would flash every 50 minutes or so and you had yet another remote to keep track of. We thought we could live with it but it turns out that when you're finally getting into movie or show, that stupid box distracts you to get you to hit buttons on the remote and it totally killed the enjoyment of watching TV. Plus, playing games online was a pain because you couldn't pause to hit the buttons. It made watching TV stressful because it was only a matter of time before that stupid box went off and annoyed you. We were all fearfully anticipating the flashing lights and developed a constant urge to hit the remote buttons to prevent the lights from coming on.

And the worst part of it all was learning that Nielsen wasn't even tracking the shows we were watching on Netflix, they were just tracking whether our TV was on or not. Netflix tracked what we watched just through their service but Nielsen just tracked whether we turned on our PS3/PS4 or not. It was just an awful experience.
