Consumerism wants you to get new phone every year, new car every couple of years, and everything else that can be worn out, or outdated.

When it's more expensive to do the right thing, or there's potential profit loss, obviously majority will contribute to further pollution.

Also cheap labour contributes to the problem. It's cheaper to produce, and at the same time less people to buy.

Accumulating debt also a tumor of humanity. It offers better 'now' than the future. Literally stealing money from the future. Debt also makes people used to lifestyles that are much better than what it would take to solve it's issues, which makes many resist changes.
