I'm not talking about the natives. I'm talking about the big populations of people like Australians, Canadians, etc. who are the descendants of colonisers.

I'm not here to justify colonialism, I'm just trying to talk about the circumstances that might have led to so many British people, including myself who isn't even ancestrally British, don't particularly identify as "Europeans". Part of that explanation is that there are a lot of basically British people far away from Europe.

You can't claim your former colonies as evidence that you're not part of the group of nations that colonized the world.

Never said anything about this. You've gone off topic. The UK is definitely part of a group of nations that colonised a lot of the world. What's that got to do with the situation we find ourselves in today where the British tend to identify more with non-European countries than European ones?

We're talking about how people in the UK don't think of themselves as European. How people feel about the EU, the circumstances in which the UK decided to join and the attitudes toward it, are all definitely relevant.

The point is that it doesn't matter that it's called the "European" Union because that's not why people said yes to joining its precursor.

You've missed the point - the point is that people were (probably still are) ambivalent about the fact that it's "European", as opposed to being called something else like the "Trade Union".

Just because you don't like being part of Europe doesn't mean you aren't.

I'm not arguing that the UK isn't geographically in Europe. I'm trying to explain why/that a lot of British people don't think of ourselves as "European".
