You're right it does sound very ignorant, I mean that with the utmost respect. You don't know any better and it sounds like you're relaying a protestant talking point. Mary is the new Eve and she is full of Grace, she is the blessed one. There is no other human-like her, so she isn't just a person, she is the person chosen by God, she is the Mother of God.

I will recommend two things: 1) for a short read and primer on the Holy Mother I suggest getting a copy of "Meet your Mother" by M. Miravalle and to start praying the Rosary. I can't stress enough the importance of praying the Rosary, Mary will guide you to a closer relationship with Christ. No lie, I a grown man who has spent much of his adult life in combat zones while I was in the Army, cries almost daily while praying the Rosary. Mary is our Mother and Jesus never says no to His Mom.
