[Non-romantic] I (40M) have spent around $5000 this week on my cat (5m) who is sick. My friends and some family have said it is "pathetic" to spend that kind of money on a cat.

Everyone on reddit is going to sit here and angrily type out how much of an asshole these people are who would dare slight you about a procedure for your cat. However, I think that the best method in this situation would be to employ your sense of empathy. I know some people I volunteer with that would think your crazy for spending basically what these people make in the entire year on a pet. I know struggling families at church that would love to have an extra 5000 lying around so they could pay rent. I know people that wouldn't pay that price for a pet and when they thought it was too much, take the pet out back. I know people that would pay 6000 only and thank God it was less otherwise that pet would be gone. IU know those that would take out a second mortgage to pay for their pets health. And I know people that have posted more money on an animal than I will probably make in my entire life. My point is everyone in your shitty situation would do something different, depending on their own situation. So, fuck anyone that disagrees with you because they are not in your situation. Deal with your own shit the way you want to deal with your own shit. Good luck brother.
