NooB Monday! - (December 07, 2015)

Sorry, I didn't read the sidebar or anything yet. If my post here is the wrong place for this, let me know and I'll remove it. I'm just looking for some feedback on the viability of this basic plan.

I want to start a tech business. I live in a small town in Ohio, about 30 minutes south of Cleveland. I've been doing software development for 8 years. I want to start doing PC repair, tech support and/or custom software solutions. I plan to print out my own, professional looking fliers and put them up at the usual spots in town, just to test the waters here. Since the town is mostly older folks, I figure 1) fliers are probably one of the best way to hit that demographic and 2) they probably aren't tech savvy, meaning they probably need my services. If I get some decent success, I plan to look into expanding to a website, newspaper ads (small town paper) and potentially converting a room of my house into a dedicated business space or renting a location near the town center (long term goal, of course). I'd also hit up the local businesses and offer service contracts to them, scaling up slowly until I figure out how many clients I can comfortably handle.

Risks: primarily, I'm concerned I won't have enough business to quit my day job, like I want. There is some nearby competition, but nothing in town.

Pros: Because of the nature of this community, assuming my people skills don't such, I believe I can build a reputation as the local IT guy in town. This is a very close knit, word-of-mouth sort of area, as I understand it.

I'm literally just looking into this starting today. I've thought about it for a while, and I need to try. Let me know why it won't work and what I can do to help myself succeed here. Again, sorry if this is the wrong thread for this sort of thing.
