Not diagnosed with OCD, nor do I think I have it. I just have a question for this sub.

How do you handle the false stereotypes?

What's it like having OCD for you?

I'm obsessed with getting as close to the truth as possible in every single matter. I blurt out vulgar nonsense phrases, do weird movements and I hit myself in the head when in extreme distress.

Until recently (after diagnosis and ongoing treatment) I've made life very difficult for my family if they didn't do and say everything as I believed was the "correct" way.

My OCD is the culmination of multiple traumatic incidents and episodes while being raised by two avoidant narcissists with OCD who were psychologically abused during their own childhoods.

How do you handle the false stereotypes?

The misrepresentation of the mental illness doesn't really bother me. People are misinformed about so many things that this is just a drop in the ocean as far as I'm concerned. It's enough work for me getting through the day without hurting myself to start worrying about it. I'd certainly prefer it if the situation improved but I'm also at peace with it as it is.
