“Not every man…”

Ya, that comment is purely defensive and lacks empathy and sympathy for the person sharing something that is a problem and very real.

I kind of understand why people react that way, it's easy to get defensive and want to demonstrate that you're not part of the problem when confronted with hard truths about people who you share something in common with or care about.

But those comments are also part of the problem. They're dismissive of a large problem and they serve to distract and defend against real issues being brought to light.

It's so much better if people exercise empathy first and work toward the root of the problem. It's likely they're not part of the problem themselves, so the defensive response is unjustified and shows a problem with their ego.
