The comments are negative because you’re taking a complex situation, and simplifying it down to a “black and white” frame of mind, when in reality, it’s just not that simple.

It’d be like telling someone who’s homeless to just go buy a house, or telling someone who’s poor to just stop being poor. The situation is infinitely more complex than that, and that type of advice just comes off as condescending.

It’s nice that everything worked out for you, but for some people, self-employment is just not an option, regardless of how optimistic they are, there are circumstances beyond their control that prevent them from doing so.

There’s a subreddit that deals with this kind of thinking, r/wowthanksimcured, although that deals more in mental illness, but it’s in the same vein.
