anyway, watch the video I originally replied to. That wide horizontal band that sometimes skips through the middle of the video, that's the timing signal. It's an expected long period of high voltage. When you reverse the signal, it goes negative and the CRT doesn't have a way to orient itself. Hence the bar skipping around through the video.

Another oddity is that the waveform (yes, everything is a waveform, PCM, FM, AM, QAM, all of it waveform), also encodes multiple pieces of data into a single big waveform (that can be deconstructed via fourier transforms) that varies with the emitter. Color and brightness are encoded into a video waveform and inverting the polarity with relation to the timing signal (assuming the decoder is capable of processing without the long timing block) also inverts the color.
