Every wireless company, everywhere, is going to have to invest in 5G. This investment is not unique to Canada and doesn't explain why Canadian prices are higher than anywhere else, and will remain higher if nothing is done.

"Wait until after 5G is out to tackle prices", you say. "Then the poor telcos will be able to handle some pressure from the government"? That's BS. There will be some newer, more expensive technology coming after 5G. If we buy this argument we'll never see action on prices.

Ultimately, Canada's wireless prices are high and will remain high, but not because of costs telcos must pay. It's because Canadians are relatively wealthy and have adopted wireless data so precociously that they're dependent on it. In most nations, the majority would happily do without wireless data if their telcos tried to charge the same prices Canadians pay.

Prices are based on what people are willing to pay, not cost.
