I have noticed that excessive use of proof by contradiction has hindered my learning

This, I think it's what I'm getting at (or should be getting at).

Certainly I'm not discrediting the power of proof by contradiction, but you are right I have became so reliant on it that I miss out on many ideas and intuition that authors are trying to present by using different proof methods. And certainly hinder my ability to solve problems because of my narrowed minded strategy.
