Sci-fi flat out does not belong alongside high fantasy. Kamigawa already has a great flavor, they could try to spin that many ways similar to how lorwyn essentially became eldraine, and it would probably still be great. I’m good with mild anime themes.

The closest they’ve come to sci fi would be Esper on Alara and I think that was extremely tasteful, I’m surprised we haven’t gone back, that set was wonderful. Kaladesh is somewhat similar but I found it to be so bland I dropped the game entirely until it rotated out, energy was just as uninspired as the set. Even if it made for good gameplay, which it might have, without proper flavor and juice, the draw of the game totally deflates in my eyes.
