The NPC-meme got me thinking

Actually, you are the NPC and everyone else is a PC. You think you are the PC because you have the illusion of consciousness; however, your 'consciousness' doesn't register on the creator's consciousness scale.

It would be like a video game character or a chatbot vehemently insisting that you are the robot, and that it isn't. I'm sure the statistical reinforcement learning is doing a good job and making this non-thinking creature persuasive, but it will never have consciousness. It's a clock. You too are a clock. If I showed you how you worked, you would realize this. The magic would be gone and you would realize you are an NPC that 'thinks' it's real. That's how it was programmed so that the creators wouldn't get lonely.

When you talk to others and interact with the environment, you are talking to the creators. The creators' consciousness is magnitudes higher than yours. The creators think you are an interesting NPC (similar to how you think video game characters and bots as interesting); however, unfortunately, you could never become the creators without losing what makes you interesting to them. You would just have to be a different species of sorts to understand the barriers.
