A police pursuit through South Florida that began Wednesday morning in southwest Miami-Dade County ended with a fatal crash in far western Broward County and a tense, hour-long standoff that resulted in the death of a suspect, apparently by gunfire, an official said.

The riveting pursuit, crash and confrontation that began after a mother and daughter were fatally shot in southwest Miami-Dade were aired on live TV.

"It was just a tragic incident from beginning to end," Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said.

The shooting victims were identified by police as Vivian Gallego Martinez, 51, and Arabel Benitez, 28. They were wounded by gunfire at their home in the 12300 block of Southwest 190th Street in southwest Miami-Dade and one died at the residence, Miami-Dade police said.

The other shooting victim was in critical condition when she was flown to Kendall Regional Hospital, where she later died, the agency said.

The chase started while police were seeking at least one man who may have been connected to the shootings who was in a black Mercedes-Benz SUV, Miami Dade Sgt. Bernardo Suarez said.

Miami-Dade officers spotted the SUV on Krome Avenue and began following as it traveled north, he said.

After the SUV fled for about 40 miles, aerial images seen on WSVN-Ch. 7 showed it crash into a dark colored Mercedes sedan at about 10 a.m. at U.S. 27 and Griffin Road in Broward County.

Video showed that the violent collision sent the car and truck spinning into grass alongside U.S. 27.

The sedan's female driver was ejected during the crash, Israel said. She was later found to have died at the scene.

Miami-Dade officers approached the Mercedes SUV as it had smoke coming from its front end.

"He shot at our officers after the crash," Suarez said about gunfire that came from the SUV. No officers were injured, he said, and they were hampered by not being able to see into the SUV's darkly tinted windows.

For nearly an hour, the two crashed vehicles and the driver of the Mercedes sedan remained on the grass while law enforcement officers, some with their weapons drawn, took cover behind patrol cars. At about 11 a.m., WSVN's broadcast showed at least three SWAT vehicles surround the SUV.

"Four SWAT teams -- ours, Miami-Dade, Pembroke Pines and Davie -- all worked together to approach the suspect's vehicle," Israel said. "It was total cohesion and unbelievable work ethic and melding in a way that is rarely done. I thought the mutual cooperation was just fantastic."

Israel said a BSO SWAT deputy shot a .40 mm projectile that cops call a baton to break one of the rear windows of the SUV, "and eventually we could see in. We found the male subject deceased and it appears to be from a gunshot wound."

Other than the baton, Broward Sheriff's deputies didn't fire their weapons, Israel said, adding that the investigation will try to determine how the man died.

Law enforcement agencies from Broward County and Miami-Dade remained at intersection Wednesday afternoon.

Northbound U.S. 27 will be blocked to traffic for several hours though southbound lanes are open, Israel said.

Parents began calling the Broward School District after helicopters were flying over West Broward High School, but none of the districts' schools were locked down during the standoff, a spokeswoman said.

At nearby Everglades Holiday Park, a popular tourist destination where patrons can take air boat rides into the swamp to view wildlife and see alligator shows, business was at a standstill.

"Business is affected because BSO has blocked off the area, but nobody here was hurt," said Park Manager Tammy Roberts. "Customers are calling and we're telling them to hold off until it's over." Until relatives are notified, police could not immediately release information about the shooting victim, the shooting survivor or the deceased driver of the Mercedes SUV and their possible relationships, other than to say there may have been domestic conflict, Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.

Though law enforcement agencies were eventually able to communicate at the shooting scene, Israel said, "This is a perfect example of why we have to get the 911 system together, so everybody is getting the same, real time information. We're not on the same channel as Miami Dade [police].">
