These were't Americans yet. This should be, "When the British arrived" America was a British colony, much like much of the Caribbean and India and parts of Africa. Post Revolutionary War, we hit on your second paragraph (for parts of it). A lot of the US cavalry was based on the British mounted cavalry system. The similarities to the cavalry that quashed uprisings in India are terrifying.

But, yes, the rest of it is unfortunately spot on.
