Obscure Music Thread #17 Weird Music (apologies for being a day late)

First off, thanks for introducing me to that Don Bradshaw-Leather album, I really like what I'm hearing so far. I love that hazy production style.

Okay, so, weird music. I could go with something canonically weird like Trout Mask Replica or maybe I could do some obscure noise artist like Kadef or Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock or something like that, but today I've got something even more fucked-up and bizarre for you guys. Something so utterly batshit insane that it actually made me question my mental health because I couldn't believe that I could like something this bizarre.

Five Starcle Men.

Go listen to that song I just linked, and then realize that that's actually one of their more normal songs. Yeah.

Okay, so, these guys were a couple teenagers from California who really enjoyed their cough syrup. Like, really fucking enjoyed their cough syrup. Their music, and their entire aesthetic in general, was extensively inspired by their DXM usage, and it shows, oh boy does it fucking show. I have never encountered another band that manages to be as surreal and nonsensical as these guys. The only thing I can compare some of their stranger material to is the sounds and voices I hear when I'm in sleep paralysis.

I just... yeah, I dunno. This band just connects with me more than they really should. I mean, I've always been a fan of surrealism, and there are at least a few other people out there who appear to have been as affected by this band as I was, but I am truly, truly uncomfortable with just how much I can relate to such a fucked-up and bizarre project. It doesn't make me feel any better to consider that one of the members of the band committed suicide just a few years after they started making music. This whole thing just makes me very uncomfortable.

If you're interested, you can download most of their discography here, and there's also an unbelievably strange video of a live show here.
