[OC] 2018 Budget for 30 y.o Couple in the Midwest

I saw one of the SankeyMATIC graphs on this sub and checked out some more on /r/dataisbeautiful sub, too. I used my data in Mint and W-2s from 2018 to outline our income and expenses for the year.

This was mostly for fun while exploring SankeyMATIC, but I'd welcome any advice or questions.

Some background info:

  • I'm in IT, my wife is in her med school residency
  • We currently own a home and owe about ~225k on an estimated value of ~475k. We bought it several years ago for under 400k.
  • We are currently childless, but have a child on the way
  • We're saving for a larger home, hence stuffing a lot of money away in a penalty-free CD. Aiming for the 600k-750k price range (housing is expensive - this will get us an average-sized 4 bedroom home that doesn't need many updates).
  • Only one of us needs to drive to work. The other can walk.
  • Near the end of last year, I switched my 401k to be completely Roth. I had been trying to give myself options by also contributing to the traditional 401k, but I have enough non-Roth options for that already.
