[OC] Brazil's last week fires (17.08 - 24.08, last 6 years)

Ok. So I wanted to tell you that São Paulo went dark at 3pm because of the heavy smoke that was carried there from the Amazon and the Pantanal, among other contributing factors. All the street lights turned on, that’s how dark it got. I was trying to tell you that story without personally typing that story here. But since you borderline offended me, saying that I don’t care about data and stats, here I am.

This issue is more political than anything, specially this year. Yes, fires are within the normal range, but if you look closely, environmental factors are contributing less this year than they did previous years and yet this year there are more fires. There are people acting criminally, using fire to clear new land for cattle and crops, that’s why on the video here you can clearly see state lines and national park borders. The president that got elected at the beginning of the year is doing little to acknowledge the problem or punish the criminals, which only makes more farmers think doing that is a good idea.

So, this is a political issue. We have to analyze the data to see what’s truly happening and also watch what’s going on around us, what people are saying and what politicians are doing. And I don’t know a better way of doing that other than read the news from trusted sources on both sides of the aisle.
