[OC] Half-baked ideas. What are some thoughts you have to improve the NBA that you haven’t fully thought out but feel like their might be a good idea in their somewhere?

Belt Jerseys

You guys remember the concept of tracking through the regular season who holds the belt (ie. the previous champion, and then the first team to beat them, and then the next team to beat that team, etc....)?

Each team designs a 'belt jersey' which is manufactured in just enough quantity for the team, but otherwise kept top secret (not even the players will see their belt jerseys until they earn them). When a team defeats the current 'belt' team, their belt jersey gets revealed, and they wear it until the lose. A team's Belt jerseys are only available for sale (online only, since they haven't had a large production run yet) while that team holds the belt.

So for example GSW comes out in Game 1 wearing a classy jersey that celebrates their recent championship. Every game against them while they hold their belt takes extra meaning for the opponent, because it's their chance to earn their belt jerseys. Perhaps they win their first couple games, and the Kings knock them off in game 3, and next game out the Kings are wearing their Belt Jerseys, defending the belt as long as they can, and the Kings belt jerseys are weird and wacky, but it doesn't matter, they still earned it.

Beyond the jersey, are there any implications in holding the belt? No. Does it count for anything at the end of the season? No. Gimmicky? Yeah. What it does is gives fans something extra to follow during the regular season. Some random middling-team winning streak in the middle of January now becomes an epic belt defense. A belt-winning upset becomes more exciting than a regular upset. It gives fans another reason to actually care about games not involving their teams (ie. If need the current belt-holder to win their current game but lose their next game to give my team a shot at the belt, I'm definitely going to be paying attention to those games).

Yeah, it's logistically complex. You've got to have some way of transporting these jerseys with you on any roadtrip, such as a lock box. And getting new jerseys stitched in case of trades, etc. Keeping it all secret and leak-free. But it would be a lot of fun just to make that something significant to track during the regular season... it is its own season-long plotline.
