[OC] My 2-month long job search as a Software Engineer with 4 YEO

The rounds are usually short, and focus on different areas:

  • first is a short call with a recruiter (not a sourcer) to discuss the timelines, preferences, financial stuff, to see if they can say anything about their job

After that you schedule a block of interviews (can be either back-to-back or split out):

  • behavioral round - to see if the experience of the person is suitable for the role (this is typically with a manager, not a recruiter)
  • coding - to filter out people who can't code at the required level
  • system design - to roughly see seniority by designing a more complex system

After that you have a final call with a HR. For junior roles system design is typically replaced with another coding round with an independent person, for senior roles you can have two system design rounds.

Depending on how people call these, this is either:

  • a single round process, because the ~3h of meaty part is in one block
  • a six round process because people also count HR or sometimes even sourcers into it
