Get off my desk

*This was originally in response to some person who deleted their comment, inferring that black people are more violent and more primal with less control of impulses. Typed all this, still felt like putting it here for the inevitable conversation.

Yeah, I disagree. I don't think black people are more animalistic and have less control over their impulses (any more than any one else is - flash mobs and mob mentality happen everywhere).

If I had to guess (and make no mistake, I am guessing), I would think it would have more to do with black American history and the civil rights movement. I was born at the end of the 80s so I can't say I saw it first-hand, but it's possible after the civil rights movement, blacks had the opportunity and support to challenge the authority of white people and any one else in power.

My generation was born to parents born in the 50s-60s, and things like racial resentment tend to get passed on. You can blame the parents for lots of racism in the US today. I wouldn't be surprised if some black parents who were resentful went on to either encourage or implicitly allow anti-authoritarian behavior.

The other speculation I have is more exclusive to the past 2 decades. Social Media has allowed for a very wide platform for debate, one where you can find support behind just about any viewpoint imaginable. One of these viewpoints is that black people need to stick together and support one another, perhaps due to a feeling that they have no support from other races. I think this is often confused for ignorance about the gravity of crimes and such, but I believe it's much more of a self-governing community thing. Anyways, I think that many young black people are exposed to a culture in which actions can be turned around by crying "racist".

Finally, it depends largely on what area that video was shot in, but the lower-income, the less time parents have with their children, the less energy they have to discipline them, and the less time they have to educate themselves on things like developmental or behavioral psychology. In addition, almost all of us know from personal experience or from being around schools the overwhelming mob mentality that happens in high school/middle school. These last 2 points aren't really race issues, but I think that when combined with the other 2 above ideas, they do a good job explaining this kind of behavior.
