Unusual Situation 12 man standard

Im new to FF and was over at a fellow manager's place when he decided to bring out his laptop to discuss add/drops he might make. At first it was about players that didn't matter, but then it turned to QBs on waiver.

I have Wilson, he has Cousins and I suppose because Wilson is an obvious start he didn't think I would be interested in a QB who was recently dropped on waivers to clear tomorrow (Stafford). The problem is, I currently have a bid in for Stafford because I want to play him during Wilson's bye week when the Lions play the Saints.

I didn't say anything because I am new at this - just sort of went with it. He didn't put in a bid in the end, but said he will try and get Stafford for Cousins' upcoming bye week.

I feel as if I have to drop my bid because the appearance of me using that information to screw him means I ought to drop my bid (even though I haven't altered my bid since I first made it days ago).

What are the general thoughts on this situation? I obviously should have spoken up, but I didn't expect this conversation.
