Official Discussion - Alien: Covenant (US Release) [SPOILERS]

What's weird is, you go through Aliens, and most of the characters are basically one-note. Yet they were all still so much more interesting, cool, whatever than the characters in this movie. Or Prometheus for that matter. Because you gave them cool stuff to do, defining moments, etc. There's nothing wrong with the actors in Prometheus or Covenant. It's just poor writing. They're not really given much to do.

I just saw this and I wasn't really that into it. I didn't have very high hopes, so it definitely didn't underwhelm. Much like Prometheus, it's just kind of there. There's some good ideas, some cool sequences, lord knows it's filmed very well (aside from CGI aliens, Ridley obviously loathes CGI), but it was just kind of like...okay....story continues....don't really care. None of the human characters do anything to make this story interesting.

[spoiler text here]I feel like this movie's purpose was to retcon Prometheus. All of the questions asked by Prometheus were killed off here. We're on a planet with Engineers, our fucking CREATORS PLANET, yet it's not really a plot point to anything. David shows up to destroy them all. That's that. Nobody mentions anything about this alien planet they're on, or the thousands of corpses of an alien race. Engineers no longer matter in any shape or form to this series. It was a cowardly move writing-wise. Instead of answering the questions YOU asked by making this series, you wrote them out so you don't have to, and can just continue making Alien movies. Why is this even called Alien to begin with? There's like 10 minutes of Alien stuff in it and they do absolutely nothing fresh or new with the monster.

For a prequel to Alien/Aliens, they still haven't really explained what LV 426 is, how the Engineers/Aliens wound up there. Unless that's where the third one is heading. But there's 2,000 colonists and all of the Engineers are dead. So how can that be?(#spoiler)
