Official Discussion - Avengers: Infinity War [SPOILERS] (Thread Vol. 2)

Avengers: Infinity War is a very entertaining movie. You won't be bored watching it. With that said, the amount of people calling it the best movie of the MCU or worthy for a Best Picture nomination might be getting ahead of themselves. This feels less like a movie and more like an event. Like the two part finale of a season and we've just seen the first episode and aside from Josh Brolin, who is riveting as Thanos, none of the supporting cast excel. They're all good but because the film is very much an ensemble, most of the actors aren't given enough material to give a fully-bodied performance. The only character who gets an arc of her own, besides Thanos, is Gamora and while Zoe Saldana is good, Gamora has always been the least interesting member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and it shows in Infinity War. For the first time Gamora takes center stage over Star Lord and it becomes kind of obvious how bland she is. Karen Gillan's morally ambiguous Nebula and Pom Klementieff's adorable Mantis make more of an impact than Gamora in their limited time.

Popular characters like Captain America and Black Widow get short-shifted. They get to be heroic but they are just there. You never get the sense they're crucial to the story as say, Thor or even Scarlet Witch/The Vision.

Speaking of Thor, I loved his reparte with Rocket Raccoon. The way Chris Hemworth manages to maintain the "straight man" composure and yet be unintentionally funny is genius, he's like the Alyssa Edwards of the MCU.

Now I'm going to be in the minority when it comes to this but I wasn't feeling Tom Holland as Spider Man. I know people love him but I thought his humor was forced and obnoxious and Peter Parker is supposed to be a geeky teen genius. Here his comic delivery didn't flow as well as I wished. And the constant Alien reference got pretty tiring.

Of the Guardians, I loved Dave Bautista as Drax, so funny. I hope he manages to be as big as the Rock. He certainly has more range. Chris Pratt is charismatic and brings the laughs with his comic timing.

One guy I wasn't feeling at all was Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/the Hulk. What was up with the constant attempts to be goofy, clumsy and funny? It wasn't funny. It was just lame. Though that Hulkbuster scene worked because of Okoye's reaction (and might I say, Danai Gurira's Okoye manages to overshadow Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther once again. T'Challa barely made an impression in IW but Okoye got to give her one-liners and still kick some alien butt).
