Official Discussion - The Equalizer 2 [SPOILERS]

Really average unfortunately. Felt like 2 movies fighting against each other. I like this character, and all these personal relationships he has. And him driving around as super assassin, just helping people out and fucking people up when he stumbles across injustice.

This is what was great about the first one. In the process of leading this alternate life, he's forced to take action against a significant enemy. He kind of stumbles into these bigger problems, and has to increasingly run up against bigger and bigger conflict...all from this one smaller incident of helping someone out.

In this one, they go the ridiculously cliche "old army buddies going bad" nonsense, and make the conflict about his past life, instead of the new one he's leading. It's way more interesting when the skills from his past life intersect with his new peaceful life. There's good tension there, and it forces him into situations where he makes mistakes, or crosses a line that reveals himself.

When they make the main conflict about his army buddies, that whole other interesting aspect of his character is tossed out the window. All the tension is gone, and just becomes super assassin dude doing the thing he used to do. It loses it's originality imo.

I really wanted the main conflict to come from him helping these people out. It should be the theme of these movies IMO. He's got these skills. He's got a big heart, and really tragic life. And when he acts out to protect people - using these insane skills that no one around him knows he has - he just gets in a world of shit. That was totally missing from this film and I think it killed the story.

Really disappointed it turned into the cliche fest it was. Even the silly storm at the end with generic-army-guys-gone-rogue. Just seemed to betray all that time at the beginning building these characters and subplots.
