I think fan discussion has cemented the idea that it is “literally a biblically accurate angel” which I think needs to be taken with a grain of salt - there isn’t such a thing first of all, since those weird ancient descriptions of angels did not come from the bible but from other religious commentators and speculators from the Middle Ages - and moreover those weird ancient angel descriptions were in fact weirder than what JJ was shown out to be. It’s probably fair to say that the design of the creature was influenced by those descriptions among other influences, such as jellyfishes and even the Angels from Evangelion; I don’t think it was meant to be as on-the-nose that “this is a biblically accurate angel and people from old times thought these were angels!” as movie discussion boards think.
