Official Discussion: Inside Out [SPOILERS]

Just got back from seeing it! Wow!! What a great movie!! I feel like the last couple Pixar movies I went to see (Brave, Monsters University...) left a little to be desired. I'll be honest, when I saw the trailer for this movie I had my doubts, as I wasn't sure how'd they be able to pull off a movie starring the personification of emotions.

But holy cow! This has to be, not only the most deep and introspective Pixar movie, let alone family movie, but also the funniest one I've seen in a long time, if not ever. I literally had to suppress my laughter so that I wouldn't disturb the audience (they were laughing too, but I have a very loud laugh) a few times. Oh man. I feel like this movie has a lot in it that everyone can relate to since its essentially an exploration of the human psyche (I use the word exploration literally here). It's amazing how they can visualize extremely complex psychological topics like depression & happiness and how human emotions work in such an intuitive and simple way. Usually Pixar movies have their deep moments that the adults in the audience can relate to on a personal level that totally goes over the heads of the kids, but I think this time it acted on a level that the kids could understand as well as the adults.

Honestly I'm struggling to think of an aspect of the movie I didn't like. Perhaps some of the character designs were a bit of an eyesore (yellow & lime green with blue for Joy's character???) which is barely even a criticism worth mentioning and I'm probably the only person that was bugged by that. I got a bit of a Jar Jar Binks vibe from the imaginary friend character that shows up later in the movie, but it was cute and endearing and I'm sure the kids loved him, and he had a purpose in the plot that he served well. Honestly though, I was smiling and laughing the whole movie (though there are some real tear-jerker parts obviously). I think this may be my second favorite Pixar movie now (after Wall-E, which is going to be hard to top in my opinion). As much as I loved the beginning of Up, I think Inside-Out on the whole was a lot better and more intelligent of a movie. While Brave and some of the other recent Pixar movies were still good movies, they lacked what made Pixar movies really great and stand out from other similarly animated films. They really brought it back together with this movie.

The story was great, the voice acting was great, the writing was great, the visuals were great, just about everything about this movie was awesome. Someone mentioned in a review I read that the coolest aspect of the movie is that the story in the real world, outside of the girl's head, wasn't some huge grand story, just a 11-year old girl struggling with moving to a new city and the stresses that come with that, but the creativity they put into this with how they show the various individual dilemmas unfold inside her head lead to an incredibly interesting and even complex story. It's practically an adventure film. I think I'm gonna go see it a second time on Monday.

I wouldn't be able to pick out a single part of the movie that was my favorite since it was all so good. I don't think I've ever had to try to suppress my own laughter in a movie theater before. If I really really had to pick one scene though I loved the short little comedy bits that were rolling during the credits and whenever we got to see inside the minds of the parents earlier in the film.

Such a creative film!! Loved it!
