Official Discussion: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood [SPOILERS]

i liked how he wrote the characters of cliff and rick. cliff has a dog, and he takes care of it really well. spoilerrick has a dog, and that is cliff.

sharon tate is such a great actress, she still gets to play herself in a movie where she is also a supporting character. i thought that was a wonderful touch, to see how wonderful she was and then spoiler get to see her survive after all.

this was also a super funny film. i saw it at a theater in a mall and it wasn't funny for the reasons most of the audience was laughing at, there just a lot of small things to tell you visually what the characters are all about that i thought was hilarious. the gags were all over the place.

tarantino brings out this thing in leonardo dicaprio's performances that it's unbelievable to watch. i love it.

i've been reading some really poorly written and half baked takes on this movie and its treatment of women. i don't necessarily think tarantino does a great job of portraying women, but that also isn't what i go to see when i decide to see tarantino. when i was in one of my graduate level history classes, we learned that it is considered tacky in criticism to focus on what's NOT in the film. because whatever is missing to you is an extension of your own taste, and decided therefore by your ego. so really all you're doing is projecting your value system on a piece of art, and not letting it wash over you. i always think about that, because i realize that these movies are a fantasy, and that it's not about real-life. not every character is your surrogate, and these made up people aren't going to do what you want to happen just because that's what you want. personally, i like leaving my troubles at the door when i go see movies, particularly period pieces. i know they'll be there for me when i leave, anyway
