Official Live Thread - World Premiere of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" [SPOILERS]

I thought Kylo Ren wasn't good villain. Looking forward to see how they flesh out his backstory and the direction they take the character in the future films, but he didn't do much for me. He reminded me a little too much of the Jupiter Acesnding villain for being irrationally evil for the sake of being evil and had parental issues. Also reminded me a little bit of Sepheroth for FFVII for the same reasons, but a lot less fleshed out.

I thought he was too imature, and imature doesn't make me take a villian seriouslly. When he got angry, he through a fit. The theater I was in actually burst out laughing then that happened.

I also really didn't care . His path to the Darkside and giving into it can be compelling, but the darkside in the films is expressed through the characters actions and fears. Some of the greatest Villians in film generally have clear motivations and charecter traits that makes us understand why they do the things they do. What I got from Kylo was "he's evil because he's fallen to the darkside". They did talk about his backstory a little bit, but . We know his parents sent him away to be trained by Luke, he fell to the darkside, he follows a sith, he is after luke he doesn't think he's fully succumbed to the darkside, he worships Vader, and he doesn't think highly of his dad. If we take the force out of the equation and just focus on the characters and story telling, I'm not buying it yet. That's what I felt with Kylo to sum up his character, "because darkside".

The lightsaber was cool and he has a cool overall design, but I hope they can build on his motivations in VIII and IX if he's going to be the main villain.
