2 months into my first season doing fantasy baseball. I feel like I've gained a ton of info in terms of knowing players, their skillsets, what people mean by "peripherals" and why they matter, etc...however, I find myself struggling to translate advice and info from one league format to another.

For example, I gather that stolen bases - while a source of points in points leagues - are even more valuable in a category league.

I also feel like "counting" stats - while obviously necessary to score pts - are maybe more valuable in roto because you can hit 3 home runs and strike out three times and still have the value of 3 home runs. In a pts league that value would likely be reduced due to the Ks. Also, I'm assuming walks are less valuable in most roto than they are in pts.

These differences in format seem super important. I guess I'm wondering whether there is a rule of thumb for assessing player value across these formats, and if so what is it?

For instance, I know Villar is underperforming and I doubt anyone - or most - people are going to cut him for a while. When I look at his projections though I have a hard time justifying rostering him. Aside from positional eligibility and steals, what does he offer in a points league that say, Kinsler, doesnt offer? IIRC Kinsler currently has nearly as many BBs as Ks. Even if Villar somehow steals, idk, 50 bases, is a guy who likely won't sniff more than .250 BA with Villar. When the best case scenario seems distant and due to stealing bases, I feel like a guy who just gets on base consistently, can hit for power, and doesn't whiff a ton is what might be most conducive.

any tips/advice is much appreciated.
