Official r/danganronpa Favourites Poll Results: Part Deux!

#17 - Touko Fukawa/Genocider Whats-Her-Name

SD's Personal Ranking - #22

Average Poll Score - 5.975

Well, maybe I should have split Touko and Genocider… because together, they just fell short of the halfway mark. To be fair, and to commemorate how we've gone this far, here's an extra-long write-up for you guys.

You know, Touko falls under the category of "How the hell did she survive?", since, in the first chapter, and she instantly yells at you for harassing her and being a general terrible person. This type of person in many forms, would last a long time, but then bite it painfully at about the 3/4 mark in an unspectacular fashion. And that seemed to be the path Touko was heading down, because during the entire first chapter and the first trial, she was the main proponent of the "FUCK EVIDENCE! MAKOTO KILLED MAIZONO!" hivemind. Yeesh. She makes her ascent into stardom in Chapter 2, however, on that fateful night when she comes to Makoto's room, to get him to play the middleman for her one-sided crush on Byakuya (which I still don't get). Being rather weak-willed as he was, Makoto goes to talk to him with Touko following, and when they get there, Byakuya promptly rejects her harshly, and she leaves the room in her normal Touko hysterics. We find her outside only to discover that she's even MORE in love with him.

Touko: Byakuya... To go that far...

Touko: He must r-really be concerned about me!

Naegi: You're kidding…right?

Touko: He told me to take a bath (note that she never bathes) and everything. He must really care a-about my well being!

But that's not where the magic ends in Chapter 2. Not by a loooooong shot. After Chihiro is murdered, Togami starts letting it be known that the mysterious Genocider something-or-another is one of them... and who would it actually be? Well, obviously, it's Touko, and thank god that Genocider shows up right on schedule. Arguably, Genocider is the main source of comedy in DR1, and she (and by extension the writers) went about it excellently, making sure to make her as overly-hammy and ridiculously awesome as possible. Heck, her entire existence in the second trial is amazing, where her list of accomplishments in the aforementioned trial alone are:

  1. Pulling out her scissors in the middle of the trial when she's being accused of murder.

  2. Constantly going on and on and on about her serial-killer morals and how she only murders hot guys.

  3. Constantly makes Italian food comparisons to said serial killings, that make no sense.

  4. Once Chihiro is revealed to be a boy, states she WISHES she had killed him.

  5. Insulting Byakuya, always a plus.

  6. Nicknames everyone.

  7. Just generally being herself.

After Chapter 2 ends we're left with the rest of good group picking up the pieces of Ishimaru scattered to the wind, and Genocider deciding that Byakuya was hot. And, as I have said when I did Byakuya's write-up, Genocider being thrown into the mix makes his life a living hell, since she has the same stalker attraction towards him, and even starts calling him "Master" and following him around everywhere…which is exactly what he doesn't want. So, not only is she a great character, her whole aurora of amazing is able to rub off on Byakuya and made him bearable enough, since she essentially tortures him for the rest of the game.

Togami: How did you know what color underwear I have on?

Genocider: Because I was pee-king ^ - ^

Togami: …

Aside from being the main antagonists (that aren't Monokuma and/or Junko) in the game, Touko and Byakuya also managed to be a great comedic duo when Touko shows her complete and utter devotion to him.

That scene from Chapter 4 - abridged.

Togami: Just tell us if it's your handprint.

Touko: ...Okay, it's my handprint.

Yasuhiro: Dang! She just straight up admitted it!

Aoi: So you did kill Sakura!

Touko: N-No! I swear! There's no way!

Togami: Out with it!

Touko: I... probably did kill her…

Kyouko: …Really?

Essentially, while Touko was a bit of a dud, her overall interactions and Genocider helped propel her to where she is now, and I'm considering upping her on my own rankings to compensate. They each make definitive characters on their own, but they work so well as opposites, two sides of the same coin, and I think the developers even stated that she is their favourite from the first game, and I completely understand why. Still, I maintain that everyone else was just liked more, but this definitely isn't a bad placement for them.

And who can forget the comedy?

Even though one is a Misanthorpe Supreme, and the other Stabby McMurder, they both are equally deserving of high praise. Unfortunately, they just don't make the cut, so it's sayounara!
