Official "Strangers To Ourselves has been leaked" and our anti-piracy policy Discussion Thread

First time play through, though a few songs I've been listening to for weeks. Here's my opinion thus far:

Album as a whole: Someone said it felt like it was produced by three different bands because of the different jumping around of genres. I tend to agree, but that doesn't mean it isn't amazing, because it is. It's definitely a little grab bag of everything. A lot of songs are sort of reminiscent of past Modest Mouse albums.

1. Strangers to Ourselves - 9/10. An excellent album opener, reminiscent of Good News to me. Nice for some easy listening and to zone out to.

2. Lampshades on Fire - 9/10. Been listening to on repeat ever since it came out. I'm tending to skip it on my playlist the past few days, but it blends really great on the album as a whole.

3. Shit in Your Cut - 10/10. Probably one of my favorite song thus far. Kind of reminds me of Moon and Antarctica, almost.

4. Pistol - 7/10. It's kind of... Ehh, to me. A very odd song. It's definitely different. Has a really big industrial rock feel. The percussion is very different compared to the rest of the album, and Modest Mouse in general. It'll probably grow on me in a few weeks.

5. Ansel - 8/10. The We Were Dead-feeling song of the album, IMO. Also pretty even tempo'd.

6. The Ground Walks, With Time in a Box - 9/10. I'll be honest, when I first heard this song a couple of weeks ago, it took a few plays to kind of get used to it. Now it's one of my favorite songs on the album. Very catchy. Almost good to dance to around by yourself when no one is home.

7. Coyotes - 8/10. A very even-tempo song. Nice for some easy listening.

8. Pups to Dust - 10/10. They previewed this song a few years ago on the Isaac House Tour on the show Don't Move Here. I thought the guitar was awesome then and I still do now. There's something about the lyrics I love as well.

9. Sugar Boats - 8/10. Creepy carnival piano + catchy beat + some trumpet mixed in = Unexpectedly catchy.

10.Wicked Campaign - 7.5/10 - As with Pistol, the percussion is a lot more different than other Modest Mouse songs. Has a more "indie pop" feel to it. It feels a lot more different than other Modest Mouse songs. It's good but almost sort of feels like it was made by a different band.

11. Be Brave - 8/10. Sort of has a Long Drive vibe IMO. Wouldn't listen to on repeat but it's a great song.

12. God is an Indian and You're an Asshole - 7.5/10. A good "chuckle" song in the middle of the album.

13. The Tortoise and the Tourist - 9.5/10. A HUGE surprise. This is a damn good song. I wish this one was a single.

14. The Best Room - 8/10. It's a fun song to sing along to. Very sarcastic and catchy.

15. Of Course We Know - 10/10. The first time I heard this song I stopped everything else I was doing and played it four more times in complete still silence. This is a really, really, REALLY fucking good song. An amazing album closer.

Conclusion: I'm going to be listening to this album on repeat for a few months. This was worth a seven year span between albums.
