Oh Mighty Subredditors of R/Fantasy, I beseech thee! Can you good folk direct me to good books where the protags and baddies are not idiots.

Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliot.

It's basically competence-porn space opera. All the main characters are not just really good at their specialties, but amazing at them, and pretty good at other fields they've cross trained in, and just really sharp and honed and well trained in general.

They then repeatedly get thrown into situations where their enemies are likewise competent, have overwhelming advantages and numbers, the high ground, and also usually are able to control/limit the tools and information that the main characters have access to. Also situations where no matter how sharp or quick or skilled you are, all your possible moves are bad to worse.

It's hella fun, kind of in the same way that it's fun to watch magicians escape from being chained inside a flooded aquarium, while blindfolded, while on fire, while surrounded by sharks.
