I don't buy that celibacy turns people towards raping kids. Lots of people are celibate and don't want to be, and I don't see a general trend where they become child rapists because of it, so why would it affect priests like that?

While I easily could see someone breaking their vow of celibacy, why would that make them want sex with kids? And to want to rape, which is the only way to have sex with kids? Why would those two things suddenly become attractive to you?

You can't even make some amoral pragmatic argument for it. They're not locked in a dungeon, they could go out and date adults on the sly, or hire an escort. Both of which are breaking their vows and risk getting caught, but a far less so than raping kids.

What does make sense to me is that pedophile rapists are attracted to the Catholic priesthood, both because it's a life where they aren't expected to have sex with consenting adults, and it's a job where they have opportunities to rape kids and get away with it.
