The #Oilers have signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension with an AAV of $8.5 million.

Yes which is what I said, but he's not a comparable, he only sets the limit as far as RFA contracts go. And you can't by your logic blame the market for these contracts if you're involving McDavid, given that the Oilers had direct control over McDavid's contract.

And if GMs are using McDavid as the bar instead of the actual salary cap which is the true limiting factor (and has been stagnant) then it's not surprising to be some of the bad contracts being handed out. If player X is a comparable to Y and signed last year at 6M and Y gets 30+% higher than X despite the cap being only marginally higher then Y got overpaid as a result; McDavid is irrelevant to this.

What their fans say and what a team will do is not the same. And yes at 9.5M it won't be for 8 years, it's likely that most fans don't know about this rule. I won't go into details for each specific team but the Habs were the most dangerous team as far as offer sheet is concerned but Bergervin and Chiarelli has a great relationship that he would have to risk.
