Just a perspective: when I was little we had a cat, but it was one of those very standoffish I-bite-a-lot cats. I always thought that was how cats were, and I just wasn't a cat person.
Then I got a job a vet clinic and got to meet a wide variety of cats. Turns out those cantankerous types are a minority, and some cats are just straight up cuddle bugs, who don't want to leave you alone even right after a shot. I loved those kinds. Turns out I'm a total cat person.
So maybe these people have only interacted with the wrong type of cat for their personality, and due to limited experience think all cats are like the ones the didn't mesh with.
